Heuvelmans, Bernard (1916-2001)

Bernard Heuvelmans, Belgian zoologist and cryptozoologist, was born on 10 October 1916 in Le Havre and died on 22 August 2001 in Le Vésinet. His greatest desire was to become a zoologist, so he began his studies at the ULB Faculty of Natural Sciences in 1935.

From 1948 onwards, his interest turned to unknown, forgotten or extinct animals, after reading an article by the American biologist Ivan Sanderson that mentioned accounts of so-called "dinosaurs" in Central Africa. He devoted his entire career to cryptozoology, leaving behind a large body of documentation that is housed at the Musée Cantonal de Zoologie in Lausanne. He worked for the Institute for many years.

Bernard Heuvelmans, zoologue et cryptozoologue belge, est né le 10 octobre 1916 au Havre et est décédé le 22 août 2001 au Vésinet. Son plus grand désir étant de devenir zoologue, il commence ses études à la faculté des sciences naturelles de l'ULB en 1935.

À partir de 1948, son intérêt se porta sur les animaux inconnus, oubliés ou éteints, après avoir lu un article du biologiste américain Ivan Sanderson qui mentionnait des témoignages relatifs à des prétendus « dinosaures » en Afrique centrale. Il consacrera toutes sa carrière àa la cryptozoologie et laisse derrière lui une importante documentation qui est hébergée au musée cantonal de Zoologie de Lausanne. Il fut pendant de nombreuses années collaborateur de l'Institut.

Bernard Heuvelmans, Belgisch zoöloog en cryptozoöloog, werd geboren op 10 oktober 1916 in Le Havre en stierf op 22 augustus 2001 in Le Vésinet. Zijn grootste wens was om zoöloog te worden, dus hij begon zijn studies aan de Faculteit Natuurwetenschappen van de ULB in 1935.

Vanaf 1948 ging zijn interesse uit naar onbekende, vergeten of uitgestorven dieren, na het lezen van een artikel van de Amerikaanse bioloog Ivan Sanderson waarin melding werd gemaakt van zogenaamde "dinosaurussen" in Centraal-Afrika. Hij wijdde zijn hele carrière aan cryptozoölogie en liet een grote hoeveelheid documentatie na die bewaard wordt in het Musée Cantonal de Zoologie in Lausanne. Hij werkte vele jaren voor het Instituut.
