Gilson, Gustave (1859-1944)

Gustave Gilson, who was a professor at the Catholic University of Louvain, specialised in various scientific fields, including cell theory, zoology and marine sciences. In 1909, at the age of 50, he was appointed Director of the Institute.

He was one of Belgium's first oceanographers and carried out an in-depth study of marine organisms in the southern North Sea, studying their relationship with their environment.

Gustave Gilson, qui était professeur à l'Université catholique de Louvain, s'est spécialisé dans divers domaines scientifiques, notamment la théorie cellulaire, la zoologie et les sciences de la mer. À 50 ans, en 1909, il est nommé directeur de l'Institut.

Il fût un des premiers océanographes belges et a mené une étude approfondie sur les organismes marins dans la partie sud de la mer du Nord, en étudiant leur relation avec leur environnement.

Gustave Gilson,  professor aan de Katholieke Universiteit Leuven, specialiseerde zich in verschillende wetenschappelijke gebieden, waaronder celtheorie, zoölogie en mariene wetenschappen. In 1909 werd hij op 50-jarige leeftijd benoemd tot directeur van het Instituut.

Hij was een van de eerste Belgische oceanografen en voerde een diepgaande studie uit van mariene organismen in de zuidelijke Noordzee, waarbij hij hun relatie met hun omgeving bestudeerde.
