Adam, William (1909-1988)

On 15 June 1932, William Adam was nominated at the RBINS with the rank of assistant naturalist. Over the years, he rose through the ranks of the museum, eventually being appointed head of the Invertebrate Department on 1 January 1969.

His scientific work is very varied. He has published reviews of several families of gastropods and edited papers on pelecypods. His studies on cephalopods are one of the reasons why he is so well known in the scientific world.

Next to his duties at the museum, William Adam was also Professor of Medical Zoology at the Prince Leopold Institute of Tropical Medicine in Antwerp from 1952 to 1979.

Le 15 juin 1932, William Adam est nommé à l'IRSNB avec le grade de naturaliste adjoint. Au fil des ans, il a gravi plusieurs échelons au sein du musée, pour finalement être nommé chef du département des invertébrés le 1er janvier 1969.

Son travail scientifique est très varié. Il a publié des révisions de plusieurs familles de gastéropodes et a édité des documents sur les pelecypodes. C'est notamment grâce à ses études sur les céphalopodes qu'il a acquis sa renommée dans le monde scientifique. 

En plus de ses fonctions au musée, William Adam a également été professeur de zoologie médicale à l'Institut de médecine tropicale Prince Léopold à Anvers de 1952 à 1979.

Op 15 juni 1932 werd William Adam aangesteld bij het KBIN als assistent-natuuronderzoeker. In de loop der jaren klom hij op in de rangen van het museum en uiteindelijk werd hij op 1 januari 1969 afdelingshoofd Ongewervelden.

Zijn wetenschappelijk werk is zeer gevarieerd. Hij publiceerde overzichten van verschillende families van gastropoden en redigeerde papers over pelecypoda. Hij dankt zijn bekendheid in de wetenschappelijke wereld vooral aan zijn studies over Cephalopoden.

William Adam was naast zijn taken in het museum ook professor Medische Zoölogie aan het Prins Leopold Instituut voor Tropische Geneeskunde in Antwerpen van 1952 tot 1979.
