Palaeontological study of the Neerrepen sands in the Francart quarry (Tongeren, Belgium)

Natuurwetenschappelijk Tijdschrift (Belgium), 75:75-97.

Until recently, only a few mollusc remains were known from the Neerrepen Sands, but in the Francart Quarry near Tongeren, these sands contain ghost structures of bivalves and some gastropods of which the fossilization processes are analysed; Ophiomorpha sp. are also present. The mollusc fauna includes Pallialum hausmanni hausmanni and Chlamys weinheimensis, not known until now from the Belgian Tertiary. Furthermore, differences in the mollusc spectrum of the Neerrepen sands and the underlying Grimmertingen sands suggest an appreciable hiatus between both formations. On the basis of the dinoflagellate flora, the Neerrepen sands can be placed in the Upper Eocene. As a result, the ranges of P. h. hausmanni and Hilberia stettinensis would extend downwards into the Upper Eocene. The faunal finds and the sedimentary structures corroborate deposition of the Neerrepen sands in intertidal and infralittoral conditions.
