R. Beudels-Jamar, P. Devillers and J. Harwood (1997) Estimating the size of the population of sitatunga (Tragelaphus spekei) in the "Parc National de l'Akagera", Rwanda Journal of African Zoology (Belgium). Abstract We estimate that the population of sitatunga in the "Parc National de l'Akagera" in Rwanda is approximately 9000 animals, based on counts made from a boat at regularly spaced points along natural channels through the swamps. These counts were corrected to take account of variations in the detectability of animals with time of day, using observations made throughout the daylight hours from a tower overlooking the swamps. This estimate does not take account of the effects of weather conditions on detectability and is based on an estimate of the zone of visibility which is questionable. Nevertheless, it does indicate that the population of sitatunga in the "Parc national de l'Akagera" is one of the most important in Africa.
